Mmmm…. Steak and BandAids…

“Okay, Lamar, what in the world does that mean?… I mean that just sounds absolutely disgusting!!!”

Well… I agree, it does sound, well, gross…. but stay with me on this.  Here’s the scenario:  Imagine a piece of steak.  Now imagine that same piece of steak with a cut in it.   Now, if you were to come to the assistance of this piece of steak and liberally apply idoine to this gapping cut, inject the tissue with a shot of Penicillin to ward of infection, and then close the wound with a BandAid, would the steak heal?

Well… would it?

I know what you are thinking…. you’re thinking this is one of Lamar’s trick questions!

Well it isn’t.

And when I return…. I’ll have the answer… plus, the real reason I posed such a ridiculous question.

But first…. a little house keeping, mixed in with some odds and ends.

At the very top of the program… you heard Cliff Ravenscraft, aka, the Podcast Answerman, give us a little voice promo to open the show.  And I  want to thank him for that… But, if you been listening to SpinalColumnRadio for any length of time, you have heard me refer to him.  Cliff is a professional podcaster…. he has nearly 2400 episodes under his belt, spread over 20- plus different podcast shows that he manages through his Generally Speaking Podcast Network at GSPN.tv. One of his shows — PodcastAnswerman — is, well, it’s a podcast about podcasting.  Cliff was instumental in helping us get our “show on the road” before we launched on January 1st of 2010.  He helped us with equipment purchases and consulting on all of the technical stuff that goes on behind the scenes of a podcast.  It would have been very difficult to have done everything in the time frame we were working in without his expertise.

So, with all of the excitement that’s been going on with our podcast lately, Cliff asked if I wouldn’t mind coming on his show to talk about it….. a refreshing twist to BE the one being interviewed after amassing 30 interviews since our launch.  Which is kind of surprising — to me at least — because I never set out thinking I’d be doing so many interviews so quickly….. but frankly, I’m just hanging on for the ride.

So, if you are interested in hearing a my interview on Podcast Answerman….and getting a bit of a behind the scenes look at our podcast and the impact that it is having…. check out the show notes for a link to that interview.

Speaking of interviews…. on this episode of Spinal Column Radio…. we have pressed paused on our massive collection of New Beginnings Chiropractic Weekend interviews (don’t worry, they’re coming back)… but the idea is that we wanted to have at least a foot in continuing to produce content that is a little more in line with our original format… content that would not only appeal to the chiropractor or chiropractic enthusiast, but also the general public looking to learn more about health and healing.

So this episode, happens to be one of those.  And for right now at least, I’m planning to do one per month and then filling in the remaining Fridays with our New Beginnings Chiropractic Weekend interviews.

And speaking of New Beginnings…. plans are being set for us to pack up our gear once again and join them in the Spring… for their Spring 2011 New Beginings Chiropractic Weekends Conference…. so…. we are looking forward to that!

Okay…. so many tidbits to talk about… but I’ll save them for another show….

So, the question at the top of the show:

“If you cut a piece of steak, put iodine and a bandage on it and even give it a shot of Penicillin… will the piece of steak heal itself?”

Well, that’s the question my Mississippi chiropractic colleague — Chiro Howie on Face Book — recently posed in an article of his… and I’ve gone ahead and linked to that article in my show notes.  And also I want to give him credit for this great question… which inspired me to write an article myself and well, obviously a podcast.

So, what’s the answer?

Would it heal?

The answer, of course — and it’s not a trick question… the answer is obvious enough for a child to answer.  The answer is no.

And yet as obvious as this answer is, as a society we don’t take it to heart.  In 2002, doctors wrote over three billion out-patient prescriptions, and in 2001 it was reported that 77 percent of Americans take over-the-counter medications to treat everyday ailments.

Why is this so shocking to me?

…. because somewhere along the line we’ve been fed the misperception that health comes from something that you do or give to yourself.  Something that you introduce from the outside-in.   But health does not come from a pill…. Health does not come from a mist, a rub, or a syrup.  No, health does not come from altering your body chemistry by something you take from the outside in.

True health comes from within.  It is an inside out phenomenon. The reason the steak didn’t heal in the example…. is because the steak is dead — it’s not living.  That’s the mystical varibable the separates You from the piece of steak.  You see, if you cut yourself, used iodine, Penicllin, and a BandAid, you’d heal.  Why?   Not because of stuff you put on it.  But because you are ALIVE.  And it is this life force — this life energy — that separates living tissue from dead tissue.  It’s is what gives you the ability to heal.

So instead of focusing on chemically altering symptoms to bring about “health,” we should be diverting our efforts to encourage our life’s energy the optimum ability to express itself.

BJ Palmer, the developer of chiropractic, once stated:

“Have you more faith in a spoonful of medicine than in the power than animates the living world?”

So, how do we turn this power on and keep it at full throttle?  Chiropractors help people do this everyday by monitoring the circuit breaker box of the body’s electrical system — the spine.  By ensuring that the bones of the spine are moving as they should,  the vital nerve energy that courses from the brain down the spinal cord and then out between the vertebrae is able to communicate and deliver life to the body.  And when this is done, the body simply works better.  It’s what allows it to heal.

You see, chiropractors operate on the fact that our bodies are self-healing and self-regulating.  There is nothing magical we do to the body.  We don’t add anything to it… nor  do we take anything away.  We simply remove interference that can occur from everyday stresses to this life energy that our nervous system transmits.

I realize that  I’m speaking from a health paradigm that may be foreign to you.  That’s okay, because it was once foreign to me too.  Our society has adopted a fear-based, medical model of health that looks to run away from… to escape pain…. to run away from and escape disability…. to run away from and escape death.  The health paradigm of chiropractic, on the other hand, looks to run towards something.  It looks to run towards health…. run towards healing and vitality.  It looks to run towards life!

Palmer also stated:

“We Chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul. We release the imprisoned impulse — the tiny rivulet of force — that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to cells and stirs them into life.”

Remember folks, doctors don’t heal, nor do the medications they prescribe.  Chiropractors don’t heal for that matter either!  No, only the life force that that was placed within you by your Creator is capable of healing.  Chiropractic’s goal is to help release it, and then get out of its way!

I just love chiropractic!  Thanks so much for joining us…. If you’re interested, the companion article to this podcast sits at SpinalColumnBlog.com…. and the link, of course, is in the show notes.

Spinal Column Radio would like to remind you that true health comes from the inside out — not outside in.  As such, the content of this podcast, along with the show notes and related links, is not intended to cure, diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease.  But, instead, is meant to inform and inspire you in asking better questions regarding your health.  Since the circumstances surrounding your particular situation are unique, you are encouraged to consult with a Doctor of Chiropractic — or other health care practitioner of your choosing.

Next time on Spinal Column Radio, we’re jumping right back in to our pool of interviews.  This time it’s with New Beginnings Board member, Dr. Jay Handt…. a great interview, you won’t want to miss!  That’s next week.  So, until then, for my son Logan, tweaking the knobs on the mixer board, this is Dr. Thomas Lamar, your podcast chiropractor.
